Co-Occurring Disorders
We offer a unique and internationally respected approach to the treatment of co-occurring disorders. It is common for people to experience difficulties with psychiatric and/or addictive problems. At Cottonwood, we value a holistic approach to treatment. A patient's medical, psychiatric, psychological, nutritional, and counseling needs are thoroughly assessed as part of the admissions process. These assessments serve as a guide for the development and implementation of a patient's individualized treatment plan. The assessment process, however, continues throughout the course of a patient's treatment.
Assessments
Upon admission, each patient will participate in a series of assessments to aid in the development of an individualized treatment plan. Assessments include a complete physical examination, psychiatric evaluation, psychological testing, nutritional consultation, cognitive testing (if necessary), and a review of biopsychosocial history. Ongoing psychiatric and medical follow-up allow initial assessment information to be modified to meet the changing needs of the patient throughout treatment.
Education
The educational needs of each adolescent patient are thoroughly evaluated and thoughtfully considered as part of her participation in treatment. Sweetwater adolescent program offers ongoing education provided by Desert Willow Educational Services, a certified school. The identified teacher from Desert Willow will coordinate educational assignments with each patient's current school to determine educational direction while the patient is in treatment. Tutoring is offered twice weekly and educational credits are transferable.
Family Program
Families play a crucial role in the overall recovery process of each adolescent patient. As part of the treatment program, each adolescent patient and her family will be scheduled to participate in a week of structured family therapy. Family members stay at a nearby hotel and are transported daily to the facility. Family week combines an educational component with structured communication exercises to address issues of conflict and concern as well as to strengthen communication and heal relationships.
Discharge Planning
Cottonwood Tucson recognizes that recovery does not end when a patient leaves treatment. This understanding provides the foundation for our discharge planning process. In this process, consideration is made for each patient's individual needs and resources and appropriate referrals are made for ongoing care, including extended residential care, therapeutic boarding schools, intensive outpatient programs, 12-Step meetings, and individual psychiatric and therapeutic services.
